Common Wood-Nymph
Cercyonis pegala

Observation date: July 21, 2023
Submitted by: Vonda Zwick
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Several seen in the prairie clearing near the woods at the north end of Phantom Trail at Crabtree Nature Center. Butterflies flitted low to the prairie. They would disappear in the grass, then reappear. They did not seem to be interested in the blooming flowers (Wild Bergamot, Red Clover, Black-eyed Susan). They appeared all black to the naked eye, but when the light shone through the wings, the brown tones and eyespots were visible.
