California Sister
Adelpha californica

Observation notes: This was my first observed butterfly of the day after the passing of Tropical Storm Hilary. I was anxious to see if anything would come out. This Sister was hanging out in Oak trees lining this portion of Escondido Creek. (Creek was running high.) These butterflies normally fly up in the treetops, but the bridge over the creek got me very close. As a result these are the best shots I've been able to take of this butterfly. The weather was overcast with some sun breaking through occasionally, mostly to the west of the Harmony Grove area. There weren't many other sightings this day, and no others at this specific location. This butterfly displayed some minor aggression, similar to what I have seen with Mourning Cloaks, taking a short flight to harass me before returning to the tree.
