Painted Lady
Vanessa cardui

Observation date: November 27, 2023
Submitted by: Zencoyote
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Surprisingly scarce locally this year, most ladies I have seen were West Coast or American, especially hilltopping individuals in the Calavera area. But Painted Ladies have recently become more numerous as they seem to be travelling south through the area now. This one was near the summit of the "Volcano" in Calavera Preserve, resting here on bare rock. The weather was cool and threatening to cloud over but remained clear enough for some individuals to be out. Skippers and Ladies, and a possible Red Admiral were hilltopping. The numbers are way down from earlier in the fall.
