Muir's Hairstreak
Callophrys muiri

Observation date: April 22, 2025
Submitted by: hasfitz5
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I have been looking for this species on the summit of Mount Diablo for seven years, at least, ever since I heard from a friend of Dr. Shapiro that they use some groves near there for propagation. It is visiting Ericameria linearifolia.

Coordinator notes: Great find! The muiri I have collected, the ones further south in Kern, SLO and Monterey Counties have nelsoni genomics. I personally still regard gryneus/siva as different from nelsoni or muiri. Different scientists have drawn different conclusions about the gryneus/siva/muiri/nelsoni groups. Nelsoni in the Pacific Northwest may not be a species but in my area I believe they are. The butterflies are not talking!-Ken Davenport
