Observation notes: This moth was on one of the solar walkway lights at the head of our front walk. It was quite a surprise. I live on Wilmington Island on the Savannah, Georgia, coast. I live by the Bull River bridge that heads the causeway leading to Tybee Island a few miles over. I am right at the Atlantic ocean. He (I believe it to be a male) was photographed by me in the late afternoon/evening of August 1, 2014. As is common during this time of year it has been extremely humid, and most days we see some level of rainfall. As you can see he is looking a bit tattered, his hindwings being a bit ragged. Before the sighting I had only seen pictures of them. The size was amazing (the image is pretty close to scale), and the color was beautiful.
