Spotted Oleander Caterpillar Moth
Empyreuma pugione

Observation date: January 29, 2011
Submitted by: Shay Noggle
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Empryeuma affinis pupa - after rearing some larvae found in the Oleander in our complex, most pupated fine and were released as adults to the same environment from where they were found. This was one of them. There were frequent finds of this species along the fenceline surrounding the apartments. I only reared them twice, however, as I had a respiratory reaction to the host plant when handling. Nerium is known to be toxic, butI had only heard that it is so when burning or consuming. My experience included handling, specifically the cut branches. Although I did not require hospitalization, I do not recommend handling the plant for people with weakened immune systems, allergy issues, or other health problems that could put them at risk.
