Large Tolype Moth
Tolype velleda

Observation date: October 19, 2020
Submitted by: riaevans7
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Insect was very still, but alive. Moved legs when I got closer, as if to hide better. Easy to see on solid brown building. Was on the side of a brown chalet. My guess is he was drawn to the light since he could have hidden well on any of surrounding trees. 4 ft up from ground. 6 in from small exterior light which had been left on overnight. Chalet is on small dam Little River at Cloudmont Resort on Lookout Mountain, Mentone, AL. Day was 72 degrees F, low at night around 38 degrees F. Beautiful blue skies, perfect fall weather. Trees turning. I have been visiting here 45 years and have never seen anything like this! Uploaded 3 photos. 1 closeup of insect. 1 showing its location relative to light fixture on exterior of chalet. 1 showing surroundings from spot where insect was found facing Little River.
