Sleepy Orange
Abaeis nicippe

Observation date: September 04, 2014
Submitted by: plex1ppus
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This sp has not yet been listed for HI in any records that I can locate, so perhaps the I.D. I suggest is off. But it's a much smaller sulphur than the Phoebis that are already listed for the islands, and you can make out a heavy black border dorsally and a really different wing shape than Phoebis. I don't have photos of what seemed to be the same insect near Ke'e Beach, Kauai, which is also near another botanical garden, Lumiahi Gardens.

Coordinator notes: This species was first documented on Oahu in 2013, and at that time already appeared to have established colonies - so was likely present and went unnoticed for several years prior. By 2014 it had been sighted on all major islands. Still, a very early sighting of this new species to the state.
Checklist region(s): United States, Hawaii, Kauai County
