Western Tent Caterpillar Moth
Malacosoma californicum

Observation date: June 02, 2018
Submitted by: megbee
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Grey cloudy day, was in a dry sandy area that had short grass and spikemoss
Status: Resident
Verified by: A_baldini
Verified date: August 11, 2018
Coordinator notes: Based on the extensive blue coloration on the side and the almost continuous white line running down the back, this is a Western Tent Caterpillar, not an Eastern Tent Caterpillar. Eastern Tent Caterpillars are physically different, and rarely found as far west as Saskatchewan. This one has probably left the communal web and is searching for a safe place on the ground to pupate.
