Luna moth
Actias luna

Observation date: June 24, 2018
Submitted by: Chinmom
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I found this caterpillar crawling across an open area of our campsite, at least 25' away from any grass or other vegetation. I took him inside our motorhome and gave him a large leaf I had picked off of a vine nearby. I don't know what the vine was. I intended it as food, but within only about 10 minutes, it began spinning silk across the front of the leaf, then began rolling the leaf up around itself. I kept it for almost 2 weeks, but we were scheduled to leave to head up North, and I didn't want to take it outside of it's normal range, so I found a safe place in the woods to leave it. So, I did not see it emerge.
