Observation notes: This caterpillar was found eating russian elm (Ulmus laevis). This caterpillar pupated about 3 weeks after hatching from an egg, but mold grew all over the pupa and likely was the cause of the the death of the caterpillar. Before pupating, the caterpillar stopped eating and dropped off the leaves and roamed around the bottom of the container for two days until it completely pupated. This caterpillar often remained in a straight and stiff position to mimic a branch. When threatened, it would thrash its head around and release ink if it was handled carelessly.
