Tailed Orange
Pyrisitia proterpia

Observation date: August 31, 2021
Submitted by: jamesvonloh
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: A pair of sleepy oranges mating in grass clumps alongside La Cueva Trail. Other individuals would fly to them over the course of my observation. The day was hot, breezy, and in full sun.
Status: Temporary Colonist

Coordinator notes: these are tailed oranges - note the black veins on the dorsal forewing and the broad black stripe along the FW costa - the tailless summer form, of course. We don't see mated pairs in NM very often, so this proves that they can and do breed here in summer, at least sometimes. excellent!
