Little Wood-Satyr
Megisto cymela

Observation date: May 13, 2022
Submitted by: Cascade Colors
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This seems to be a Common Wood Nymph based on the upper wing, but the underwing lines look a lot closer to Appalachian Brown images that I have viewed. I am assuming it is the former, though.
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: This is actually a Little Wood Satyr, Megisto cymela. The Appalachia Brown has a large eye spot on upper hindwing, and also uniform size eye spots arounfd rim of the hind wings. Also not a Carolina Satyr, Hemeuptychia sosybius as the top side wings lack normally any visible eye spots. Also on the Carolina the underside eye spots are much more smaller and fainter than Megisto cymela. Thank you! JAMES STEEN
