Observation notes: An individual taking nectar from stinging serpent flowers, a dwarf-shrub that has become established on the bench adjacent to a large arroyo at the Achenbach Canyon Trailhead (Organ Mountain footslope habitat). The flowers of this dwarf-shrub have been locally important to individuals of seven butterfly species, based on my recent observations. With additional, more widespread, flowering plants now available for nectaring butterflies (due primarily to monsoon rainfall) their importance will likely diminish as they are more narrowly distributed. The mid-day was hot, humid, under partly cloudy sky, and with occasional wind gusts.
