Observation notes: Overcast day (lower elevation below marine layer towards western end of Highway 2 into San Gabriels (not far very into SGs NE of La Canada-Flintridge). Stopped to photograph flowers along the road from first or second parking lot. Butterfly wasn't moving, so I gently wiggled a stem, but it dropped further down into the foliage. Didn't see it open its wings.
