Observation notes: It was a hot afternoon at the Elfin Forest Preserve. I was barely 50 meters up the Way Up Trail from the parking lot when I saw this individual camped open-winged in the shade of the upslope of the trail. After a few short flights I was able to get close enough to get some very good images. I know people get shots like this, but for years all I could get were distant shots as they patrolled the tops of Oak trees. Today for some reason this individual was both close to the ground and uninterested in taking off very far. I actually saw the butterfly again more than an hour later as I returned from the top of the trail. It was more active as the temperature was dropping. I saw a Lorquin's Admiral chasing a dragonfly at the base of the hill immediately afterwards - they seem to share the same habitat in this area.
