Anise Swallowtail
Papilio zelicaon

Observation date: June 13, 2024
Submitted by: Seth Mueller
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Saw this at the top of sugarloaf Mountain where Bairds swallowtails can be found. Butterfliesofamerica.com shows some specimens of bairdii that look very similar to a desert black swallowtail. Does bairdii in the San Bernardino Mts have more orange on the hind wings like a desert black swallowtail, or is it more restricted closer to that of an Indra Swallowtail? I’m thinking this is polyxenes, wanted your opinion.

Coordinator notes: If its a bairdii, its impossible to tell from these photos. Its definately not P. polyxenes rudkini, the shapes of the median band and forewing spots are rectangular not ocellate or rounded...Ken Davenport
