Observation date: June 28, 2024
Submitted by: Zencoyote
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Observed flying around a large patch of Buckwheat on the western edge of a large grassy to chaparral-covered flat. At first I thought it was Acmon Blue, but the interior coloration of this female is highly unusual. As seen from the pictures, it wasn't a flash coloration but quite persistent.
Day was warm, clear, a little hazy - perhaps humid. Other butterflies in the area included Acmon Blues, Marine Blues, and Bernardino Spotted Blues.

Coordinator notes: Technically, this is monticola which is a species in the Lupine Blue group, but along with chlorina are 2 different species not Lupine Blues. Those were recently elevated in a recent southern California book I wrote published and available for download for free from Colorado State Uiversity. It updates the 1973 Emmel & Emmel southern California book. Sorry I took so long, computer problems with several submissions.-Ken Davenport
