Observation notes: On July 2, 2024, I spotted this orange butterfly flitting among some of the Common Milkweeds in the front garden of our house.
At the time (~2:15 PM EDT), our weather was partly cloudy with a light breeze of about 7 mph from the SSW. The temperature was 75°F and steady, the dew point was 54°F and steady, the humidity was 47% and steady, and the air pressure was steady at 28.88 inches.
The butterfly did not sit still long enough for me the get a great photograph. Till I could grab my camera, I only had a chance to take a couple of telephoto shots (not the sharpest); no closeups as the butterfly took off. Nonetheless, I believe the photos are sufficient to identify it as a Great Spangled Fritillary Butterfly (Speyeria cybele). It is the first one I have seen this year.
