California Tortoiseshell
Nymphalis californica

Observation date: September 10, 2024
Submitted by: sandyleapt
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Marys Peak, Parker Falls. I only got a ventral photo. The butterfly was bright orange when it flew in and landed on the asphalt parking pad by the waterfall. It landed and immediately folded its wings. It did not pump its wings before flying off the way most California Tortoiseshells I have seen will do. There is some moisture in the asphalt due to a little rain on 9/9/2024. I would call this a California Tortoiseshell if it did not have that little white swoosh on its wing. I am open to be talked out of my rare butterfly. I did photograph a California Tortoiseshell a few minutes later at the same spot. I will post that butterfly as well. While I was waiting around trying for another shot of this butterfly, some sort of a large feline growled at me from the brush directly above my head and I decided it was time to leave. So no more photos of this particular butterfly.
