Field Crescent
Phyciodes pulchella

Observation date: September 17, 2024
Submitted by: Dogoszhi
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: On top of hill. Juniper-pinyon woodland but with cleared areas due to human disturbance. In cleared areas, blooming flowers include purple asters (Dieteria), snakeweed (Gutierrezia sarothrae), and an aster family plant whose flowers have small yellow disks and rays. I saw several of these butterflies in the cleared areas, usually pausing on the ground, but one stopped on a purple aster (see photograph). Partly cloudy, rapidly becoming cloudy (and soon it rained). Warm, breezy.
