Cluentius sphinx Neococytius cluentius (Cramer, 1776)

Identification: Forewing is blurry black with orange markings. Hindwing is black with orange at the base; orangish yellow patches between the veins form a band across the wing.

Wing Span: 5 1/2 - 6 5/16 inches (14 - 16 cm).

Life History: Not reported.

Flight: . Throughout the year in the tropics.

Caterpillar Hosts: Plants in the custard apple family (Annonaceae) and the piper family (Piperaceae).

Adult Food: Flower nectar.

Habitat: Tropical and subtropical lowlands.

Range: Southern Brazil north through tropical America to northern Mexico. Strays north to Mississippi, northern Illinois, and southern Michigan.

Conservation: Not required for a tropical stray.

NCGR: G5 - Demonstrably secure globally, though it may be quite rare in parts of its range, especially at the periphery.
