Observation date: September 24, 2012
Submitted by: Prairie Wetland...
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This moth was found just outside the PWLC greenhouse on the lawn. It appeared to be pumping its wings out as if it just emerged from its coccoon. When picked up, it was very actively walking and seeking upward vertical surfaces. When placed on a firm stem, it calmed down and held its wings over its back tent-like (see photo). A male of the same suggeted species was observed last week in the same area.

Coordinator notes: The white area on the forewing is wider than typical H. maia although the discal eyespot on this individual touches the dark border typical of H. maia. Using the reference The Wild Silkmoths of North America by Tuskes Tuttle and Collins the range maps on page 117 for H . nevadensis extend to western MN. While H. maia is much farther East and South of Minnesota.
