Sweetfern Underwing
Catocala antinympha (Hübner, 1823)
Family: Erebidae
Subfamily: Erebinae
Identification: Forewing glossy, usually bluish black with black lines and some brown shading, especially beyond pm. line. Subreniform spot sometimes whitish. Hindwing banded yellowish orange and black; most of fringe blackish. A small underwing.
Wing Span: 4.5-5.5 cm.
Life History:
Flight: July-September.
Caterpillar Hosts: Sweetfern.
Adult Food:
Habitat: Common in acid-soil habitats along coast; rare inland.
Range: Nova Scotia and Quebec to Maryland, west to southern Ontario and Michigan.
