Subfamily: Erebinae
Identification: Forewing gray with fine wood-grain pattern of brown and black. Northern specimens have a whitish border along forewing costa that is absent in typical subspecies. Hindwing orange, red with black bands and white fringe.
Wing Span: 5.6-6.5 cm.
Life History:
Flight: July-August.
Caterpillar Hosts: Oaks, particularly scrub oak.
Adult Food:
Habitat: Oak-pine barrens.
Range: Subspecies gerhardi is found from Massachusetts to North Carolina; typical form (subspecies herodias) is known from Oklahoma and Texas.
