Big poplar sphinx
Pachysphinx occidentalis

Observation date: July 01, 2014
Submitted by: tjheindel
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Big Popular Sphinx had been in same spot for three days and on the last day we saw eggs that hadn't been there the day before. Photographed, then carefully removed them into a plastic cup, covered with hanky and rubber band and placed in a shady spot just below where they were found. One week later they hatched and measured 2mm. Can't find any images of first instar, which doesn't look like the later stages. Although provided with fresh cottonwood leaves, they were found dead on the second day. Any identification correction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help.
