Observation notes: This individual landed briefly on a small rubber rabbitbrush patch and seemed to feed for a few seconds on the blossom clusters, moving from one cluster to another after ten to fifteen seconds probing the flower "cups." The morning was sunny and hot, near 80 degrees Fahrenheit (with 100-degree heat expected in the afternoon). Sporadically, breezes arose to 3 to 5 mph. Over all, during the two hours of walking, one queen, three monarchs and a couple pipevine swallowtails came into view -- usually flying high overhed. One other yellow butterfly passed overhead while I was in the north end of the garden --the intensity of its yellow coloration was much like that of the individual pictured for this report, but it seemed twice the size of this individual.
