Observation notes: Hot day, low 80s, several other common checkered skipper in vicinity. Former grazing land, now covered by ruderal vegetation and non-native annual grasses. Butterflies mostly seen near top of hill/ridge.

Coordinator notes: So far, there are no authentic records for Pyrgus communis in Los Angeles County and females are inseparable. Males have to be checked by the shape of the male genitalia. It is possible alnescens and communis are really the same species.
