Observation notes: I think this is a butterfly but am not sure--day flying, about 1.5 inches wingspan (when outstretched), habitually holds wings upright as in the first photograph. The color is mottled browns underneath, and on top it is almost black, very dark gray, darker than in the first photo. Has small patches of white at mid-wing, and the second wings, which are also black, have a white fringe on them
