Observation date: August 19, 2017

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Sunny, with a few small clouds, light breeze, about 80 degrees, medium humidity. The ground was muddy, with lots of puddles from the heavy rain the day before. The butterfly was working on a giant burdock, working from blossom to blossom. Occasional interruptions came from bumblebees and a couple of fritillaries, but the Monarch intently persisted in gleaning as much as possible from each flower. Nearby were hawthorn, wild cherry, beech, oak, maple, lots of spruce, rhododendron, ironweed, joe pye weed, thistle, goldenrod, fleabane, and milkweed.
