Observation notes: I was told this was a catalpa/catawba worm, but I just don't think it is. I was trying to find out exactly what it is.

Coordinator notes: This is a Lochmaeus caterpillar, most likely species manteo. It is darker than usual however, possibly due to transition to next instar or some other factors. As the common name suggests, they are quite variable. Note in particular the black/white eye stripe, and the bumps on the dorsum of segments A1 and A8. -JDR
