Coordinator notes: Identifying members of Apantesis by photo alone is quite difficult. I worked on this genus for about 2 years and generally, examination of male genitalia under magnification is the only certain means of identification. However, some appearance guidelines are consistent enough that although not 100% diagnostic, they can guide to a reasonable ID. This moth appear to be a male, and having two black spots on the patagia, along with the forewing shape and hindwing coloration, the correct time and place, a reasonable ID of Apantesis phalerata can be made here. Any other expert opinions welcome of course. -JDR
