Observation notes: There were at least 20 butterflies on a patch of purple aster in the garden. They showed up when the sunshine lit up that section of the backyard (a nearby patch of the same flowers in the shade had no butterflies on them). Between 4 and 5 PM there were butterflies, although by 5 the numbers had dropped to only two that I could see (I could only look at them from one side of the fence).
