Bedstraw hawkmoth
Hyles gallii

Observation date: July 05, 2018
Submitted by: Barbara Brease
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This Hemaris thysbe (?) was resting in my lilac shrub after feeding on an adjacent lilac. Just before this, I had been watching the moth as it was feeding on the first shrub and noticed clear wings. After feeding on various blooms on the first lilac, it darted to the adjacent lilac (about five feet away) and directly to the resting spot in this photo. It was still (resting?) in the Lilac stem/twig for at least 90 minutes. One antenna party wrapped around a leaf stem. The wings do not appear clear at this point, yet I am sure it was the same moth. I have observed Hummingbird Clearwing Moths numerous times on the lilacs and pansies.
