Rosy maple moth
Dryocampa rubicunda

Observation date: August 25, 2018
Submitted by: Midnightangel75
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Green body, with light and dark stripes. Red face. Black sort of like small thorns down the top of body. Two black antennae. Three red and black thorny things coming out of each side of back end. I was able to pick them up and they did not harm me. However, a couple of them could curl up really quickly if you tried to, I guess as a defense. The most I found at one time, together, was about 19. I'm not sure as to the tree they were crawling by, but some were not near plants at all, they were walking around thru the gravel in the driveway. The weather was around 80ish. They turn into beautiful pink and yellow moths. The heads are furry like. Very pretty and they also are not harmful. I have had them on me several times and the moth will just flutter around on your arm.
