Catalpa sphinx
Ceratomia catalpae

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Caterpillars completely denude two Catalpa trees in my yard every year, but the trees grow a second set of leaves. The caterpillars often sport white eggs on their backs, laid by predatory wasps. Many of the caterpillars are killed by the wasp larvae, turning black and shriveling up before they can pupate.
