Compton Tortoiseshell
Nymphalis vaualbum

Observation date: July 18, 2019
Submitted by: tynah1994
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Tree bark look on the outside and orange inside similar to a monarch. Legs look like tiny branches, and it has mandibles that seem to roll up straight into it's mouth. Flies fast enough. Was a good size too. About 2-3 inches of wings. First time seeing one.
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: Nearly fooled me after looking back and forth over different Polygonia species in the region...actually this is a N. vaualbum (Compton Tortoiseshell). If you look at underwing photos, you'll recognize the gray "chevrons" along the outer margins, as well as the "L" shaped marking on the ventral hindwing are classic findings for the species. -jmgesell
