Cecropia silkmoth
Hyalophora cecropia

Observation date: August 01, 2019
Submitted by: Stella Mott
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I found it on a buckthorn shrub in my yard in Guelph, Ontario a week ago. I have kept it in a glass jar with mesh over the opening. I add buckthorn twigs at least once per day which it happily and neatly eats up. I poops small dark balls about 5mm in diameter - about 6-10 per day. It is about 8.5 cm long and 1.5-2 cm in diameter. As my grandchildren are saying, simultaneously awesome and disgusting looking! It does not appear to be growing larger. I've never seen a caterpillar so large before. Weather here has been hot and mostly dry for the last 2 weeks. It seems to be a slow mover. It has 2 rows of blue "spikes" along its sides, 2 rows of yellow spikes along its back, and 4 orange and black "ball-tipped" spikes on its "neck" in place of the yellow ones
