Observation notes: In one image you can see the female Bronze Copper scouting out a location to lay her egg. The next shot shows her actually laying an egg. The third image is a closeup of the actual egg she laid on detritus. It seems plausible that she could sense where the hostplant (probably Curly Dock) would emerge from the ground the following spring.
She was very meticulous about where she laid this egg. It did not seem to be a random selection.
