Observation notes: We were hiking at Skyline Ridge open space in San Mateo County, near Russian Ridge. Many of these butterflies were in and around oaks and blackberry tangles in open areas of the forest. Sunny weather, warm, but not hot (70s). Insects were abundant and flew up when startled.
