Observation notes: I observed this caterpillar after bush-hogging a field in northern central Alamance county, NC. I was surprised it survived. It appeared to be headed for the ground to pupate. The area it was found was within 100 feet of an oak tree, which was on the edge of the woods containing many oaks, hickory trees and poplars. It was a very hot day, upper 80's to low 90's. The soil here tends to be somewhat sandy. We use the field for planting forage crops for deer. Usually rye grain in fall and soy bean in spring. The caterpillar was approximately 2 inches in length.
