Mourning Cloak
Nymphalis antiopa

Observation date: March 21, 2021
Submitted by: Anne Wills
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Sunny, 70 degrees, light breeze, not very humid. The butterfly was floating along unhurriedly, then landed in a sunny spot on a recently downed tree. Nearby were oaks, shag-bark hickory, beech, maple, Virginia pine, multiflora, spicebush, autumn olive, grapevines, honeysuckle vines, moss, mixed grasses and weeds. The area is wooded, but many trees were down or broken due to an ice-storm about 3-4 weeks ago.
