Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: The moth emerged from the cocoon sometime during the night to early morning and was found at 3:00 pm on 5-14-21. The moth appeared to be a male and had the characteristic yellow and black spotted pattern of the hawk moth. The caterpillar was cocooned for several months before it emerged. The moth did not show any interest in flying until later in the evening. The moth was attracted to my body heat and kept crawling on my hand. He appeared to be too weak to fly and would make the motions, but would not take off. The weather was fairly chilly in the evening and warm during the day. Around 9:25 in the evening, he finally was able to take off and fly away.
