Mourning Cloak
Nymphalis antiopa

Observation date: May 09, 2021

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: It was on a wooded walking trail that is quite well used in the area. Mostly Aspen trees. The butterfly was flying and landing with a few feet in between each landing. I tried to get a photo of it while it was on a log to the side of the trail but it flew away. I was finally able to get quite close to it while it lay in some leaves and other forest debris, possibly to camouflage itself. I don't recall the temperature but it was probably about 14C. I think it was partly sunny that day but the trail has quite a bit of shade.
