Observation notes: A mild, mostly-sunny, late-summer morning. After photographing an eastern tailed-blue (which I have already submitted for roughly this location a couple years ago), I saw an odd flying object while walking along the road into Thatcher Woods to the parking lot. As I got closer, I saw that it was one insect carrying another; it was a bald-faced hornet (Dolichovespula maculata) carrying a butterfly, and — I think — beginning to eat it. I have more photos, but these seem the most useful.
