Hermit sphinx
Lintneria eremitus

Observation date: September 10, 2021
Submitted by: A.Campbell
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: In a mossy grassy yard in the shade. We live uphill from a creek. Its 3 invhes long. Caterpillar stayed very still after I got near it to take the pictures. It's been 10 minutes since I walked away and it's still in the same spot. I brushed it with a leaf and it did at least flinch thankfully. It has a hook on its hind end. The spot on its head looks almost velvety to me. It's been sunny today but there's evidence of lots of earth worms in the yard and a saw a few while walking around too. From upstate New York. It finally started moving again after about 5 more minutes. It has a second much smaller spot in front of the large one seen in the photo that was hidden in its neck skin folds.
