Sleepy Orange
Abaeis nicippe

Observation date: December 23, 2021
Submitted by: jamesvonloh
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Sleepy oranges were commonly present along the Rio Grande through December. They nectared from water speedwell flowers and used adjacent cattails and shrubs as a place to shelter and perch. This reach of the river supports perennial, low flow due to up=channel wastewater release. The mid-day was warm, sunny, and had light, gusty wind.
