Giant Swallowtail
Papilio cresphontes

Observation date: June 10, 2022
Submitted by: Ashlee1
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I noticed this pretty butterfly because I had never seen it before when I did a Google identification match to the photo I saw it matched this type of swallowtail butterfly that says the furthest north it has been seen is Colorado. I live on the western border of Wisconsin in Polk County outside of Saint Croix Falls, so I was very surprised if this is the actual species which it looks to be! When it was on the flowers getting the nectar it made a flickering with its wings very quickly- I wish I had taken a video the two sets of wings moved independently.

Coordinator notes: You are correct that P. rumiko is a Southwestern species. But P. cresphontes is the species in the upper midwest we see. Not a common sighting in the Northern states.
