Observation notes: This insect was immobile and kept its wings out flat for several minutes, never folding them over its back like butterflies often do. Its wingspan was about 1.5 inches. I don't know the plants it was on that are in the photo. It was in a narrow riparian area of Yellowdog Creek with nearby mature conifer forest at about 3,250 feet elevation. Weather - sunny, no wind, about 75 degrees F.
