Observation notes: Warm sunny day. Seen on border of established oak woods and suburban backyard; landed on large oak tree. Initially thought it was a Comptons tortoiseshell, but iNaturalist observer neoarctia corrected my entry to California TS, which seems to be a better match, although rare in PA. It flew well even with ragged wings. Higher resolution photos available.

Coordinator notes: This species was last seen in Pennsylvania in September 1945. Three were found at bait in northern Allegheny County.
